Bernard Newell RIP
It is with great sadness that Fordhouses Cricket Club announce the passing of one of our long-standing Vice Presidents, Bernard Newell.
Bernard had been holidaying on his favourite Greek island, Zakynthos and was unfortunately taken ill with pneumonia. His condition failed to improve, and he passed away in hospital on 2nd October.
Bernard and his late wife Pat will be particularly remembered by our older Club Member/players for their lifelong friendship with the legendary Brian (Ticker) James and his wife Maureen. As a team, the James’s and Newell’s were great supporters and users of the Taunton Avenue facilities and the many functions/events held there – what fantastic times were enjoyed by all!
Bernard was a local lad from Kingswinford; enlisted as a young man in the Army and served mainly in post war Germany. On his return to the Black Country he had a variety of jobs and then developed an expertise in garden/grounds maintenance – he was groundsman for the Express and Star Cricket Club and the newspapers Directors. Alongside his work Bernard was a keen sportsman – excellent footballer, keen cricketer for Manders and Fordhouses but above all his real passion was golf – Lilleshall being his favourite course.
Bernard was a modest, unassuming yet quietly confident character who will be desperately missed by immediate family and friends.
A memorial service, to commemorate Bernard’s life, will be held on Friday 26th November, 11am at St Mary’s Church, Bushbury, WV10 8JP. This will be followed by a wake at Greenfields Golf Club, Cat and Kittens Lane – all friends are welcome.
